Stereotypes affect the way we look at the world around us and have a profound impact on how we interact with people based on race, from job interviews to police stops and housing applications. Researchers have found that unconscious stereotyping by teachers can cause students to be put into less challenging classes, reducing their educational opportunities and turning it into a self-fulfilling prophesy – and sometimes, young people end up unconsciously internalizing the stereotypes and fulfilling them.
