For the second consecutive year, all of the Oscar nominees in the acting categories have one thing in common – they’re all exclusively white. This isn’t exactly a new problem for the Oscars. In fact, only 6.7% of acting nominations since the first Oscars in 1929 were won by non-white actors and actresses. Actors including Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee are speaking out and boycotting this year’s event. The Academy’s president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs (who happens to be an African-American woman) has admitted change in membership and quick action is necessary going forward. The Academy has announced some changes in eligibility for voting to make the membership less male, less white, and much younger, but only time will tell if those changes will make an impact.
